Cameroon appeals for security support as presidential election approaches

Republic of Cameroon’s Consul, His Excellency Onana Patrice has appealed to the Assistant Inspector General of Police in zone six Calabar, AIG Jonathan Towuru, and other security agencies to extend supports to his country even as they begin preparation for another presidential election.

The Consul made the appeal when he visited the AIG in his office, requesting for more collaboration in the areas of intelligence sharing to bolster security.

Appreciating the job done by the National Joint Border Task Force, he said the supports will boost the littoral and land border communities within the Zone ahead of next year’s presidential election.

Identifying other common security issues around the border communities, the Consul informed the AIG and his management team that his visit is to strengthen the collaboration between the two sister countries towards checkmating the security challenges along the border communities.

He said the challenges are occasioned by the activities of secessionists, terrorists and the Ambazonian rebels who are taking advantage of the vast land and sea borders as well as the strong socio-cultural affinities to smuggle arms to Cameroon. 

He alleged that cyber criminals are using social media to advertise fake jobs opportunities in Nigeria to heighten security threats through unfounded social media publications. 

Welcoming the Consul and his team, AIG Towuru was happy that Cameroon acknowledged the efforts of the Command Commissioners of Police in the Zone and the Joint Border Task Force for keeping the borders under check. 

He assured him of the Police resolve to ensure adequate protection of lives and property of citizens and foreigners alike.

 He promised to rejig the security architecture of the Zone to curtail the activities of criminals in the border communities of Oron, Ibaka. Bakassi, Etung, Boki, etc in Akwa Ibom and Cross River States in line with the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun,  policing policy to reduce trans-border crimes for the safety of all.  

The AIG called on the peace loving people of the Zone to treat their age long brothers and neighbours from Cameroon hospitably and report criminals to the Police for enhance security.
