North-East Zonal chess championship kicks off in Bauchi

The 2024 North East zonal Chess championship has kicked off in Bauchi with players from the six states of the subregion expected to participate.

While speaking to sports journalists at the commencement of the championship on Monday, the President, Nigeria Chess Federation (NCF), DIG Usman Sani Muhammad said that, the Federation had earlier mandated all zonal representatives to organize activities in order to uplift chess event in their respective zones.

He explained that the zonal championship is opened to all categories including top players, and will serve as a qualifier to the annual national chess championship and other international engagements.

According him, for a player to qualify, he/she must meet standard of twenty-one games by ranking from zone to the national camp in Abuja.

The National President urged interested players to show up and display their talents during a three day chess event in Bauchi.

Usman Sani Muhammad, who started playing chess in 1973, emphasized that through chess many issues affecting children can be corrected and guided for the betterment of the society.
