Dr. Phillips Salawu, PDP national championship frontrunner
By Anthony Maliki, Abuja
The ‘native’ members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Kogi State have thrown their weight behind the aspiration of the former Deputy Governor of the state, Dr. Phillips Salawu for the position of substantive National Chairman of the party.
This was contained in a declaration signed by Umar Otaki, Yusuf Dauda and Danjuma Andamin on behalf of the teeming members of the ever loyal ‘native’ PDP members.
‘Native’ PDP members are those who have been with the party since inception and have remained with the party through thick and thin, steering the party while migrant politicians move in and out of the party. Dr. Salawu is a proud and committed ‘native PDP’ member.
According to them, “at this critical moment in our national history, a loyal, experienced, morally and intellectually circumcised, non-aligned and committed party man is urgently needed as the National Chairman.”
They expressed dismay that after conceding power to another political party for only nine years, the great fortune of this country, what the PDP laboured for 16 years to build upon the great foundation laid by past great national leaders of the country was shattered overnight by those that succeeded the PDP in power.
They pointed out that the change mantra the All Progressives Congress dangled before Nigerians was never intended for progress.
“Every Nigerian irrespective of party affiliation and location having seen the marked difference, is longing for a return of the PDP to power to salvage the current national mess the country has been thrown into,” they noted.
They say as the only hope of this great country, the PDP must be protected from merchants of discord, power hijackers, and moles bent on destroying this great party.
On the candidature of Dr. Salawu, the ‘native’ PDP members stressed that both the nation and the party are at a critical cross roads and hence the need to bring on board a man of impeccable integrity, immense capacity, unblemished record of service, courageous, fearless, humble, clear headed and patriotic to steer both the party and the nation out of the woods.
They pointed out that a ‘native’ PDP national chairman will be loyal and committed to the party irrespective of the circumstances.
The ‘native’ PDP members are appealing to all to endorse Dr. Salawu to complete the tenure of the National Chairman of the PDP that had been constitutionally zoned to the North- Central Geopolitical Axis of Nigeria.
Dr. Salawu was the National Director of Finance of the party at its infancy in October 1998, steering the party to its financial buoyancy and affluence, that enabled the party to win the December 1998 local government elections and the 1999 presidential and the several gubernatorial seats.
He was a two-term very loyal deputy Governor of Kogi State under the able leadership of our great leader, Governor Ibrahim Idris.
Dr. Salawu is a well-decorated Chattered accountant, Chartered Banker, Chartered Tax Consultant, Chartered Stock Broker, Chartered Arbitrator, Mediator, Certified Forensic Auditor, Certified Fraud Examiner, and was recently called to the Nigerian Bar as a Barrister and a Solicitor at the Supreme Court of Nigeria to complete a full cycle of intellectual, professional, moral, ethical, and leadership circumcision.
