Senator Lalong visits Federal Polytechnic, Nyak, announces scholarships

Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District Simon Lalong has paid an unscheduled visit to the Federal Polytechnic Nyak, Shendam Plateau State to assess the level of progress at the institution.

Senator Lalong who is Chairman Senate Committee on Agricultural Institutions and Colleges was received by Director Physical Planning, Architect Hassan Nakaka on behalf of the Rector Dr. Mukaila Zakari Yau.

This was contained in a Tuesday by Dr. Makut Simon Macham, Special Adviser on Media to Senator Lalong.

Dankaka said the management, staff and students of the Polytechnic appreciate all the efforts that Senator Simon Lalong has put into the development as the institution right from its establishment.

He said the contributions of Senator Lalong have put the Polytechnic in a sound footing to pursue technical education that will contribute to empowerment, poverty alleviation, innovation and entrepreneurship.

The Director assured that the institution will do its best to ensure that the investment of the Government and efforts of all that brought the Polytechnic into existence is not laid to waste.

He however said the institution is in need of access and internal roads, water supply, power and energy, fencing, accommodation for staff and students as well as completion of ongoing projects to onboard more academic programmes for the institution including agricultural programmes.

Also speaking, Mr. Babatunde Olanrewaju, Director, Procurement said the completion of infrastructure will facilitate movement of staff and students as well as ensure that staff who are currently coming to work from Shendam live in Nyak to integrate into the host Community.

While responding, Senator Lalong said he remains proud of the establishment of the school which happened during his tenure as Governor.

He said as member Senate Committee on Tetfund and Tertiary Institutions, he has been notified of the needs of the institution having met with the Rector on several occasions.

He said very soon, there will be an official oversight visit by the Committee on Tetfund to look at the challenges of the institution.

He said in the meantime, a mini solar grid will be set up in the Polytechnic as part of his Constituency projects. Similarly, the road challenge will receive intervention through the support of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural development under Constituency projects.

On water, he said a mini dam will be done in Nyak to supply the institution and community while the transfer of water from Shendam dam which is to be carried out by the State government will be intensified.

Senator Lalong announced an annual scholarship of 5 million for indigent students from Plateau Southern Zone to assist students to pursue their academic careers.

He said the Scholarship will be under the name of his late younger brother Dr. Wummen Tsenba Bako who was an academic with passion for service and development of the younger generation. He also gave every support for the establishment of the school at its conception stage.

On compensation of indegenes whose lands are have been affected by the school, Lalong wondered why they have not been paid since he approved the funds before he left office.

While praying that monies have not been diverted, Senator Lalong said he will reach out to the government to ensure that all impediments are removed towards settling the land owners for smooth operations of the school.

The Senator also addressed some pioneer students and encouraged them to out in their best to make the school a great institution of learning and research.
