Silencing the brave, a tale of impunity in Sokoto

By Sadiq Muhammed

I write this with deep pain, disappointment, and frustration over how impunity has become the norm in Nigeria. This sentiment stems from the tragic story of a brave young woman in Sokoto who dared to speak out.

The tragic story of Hamdiyya in Sokoto serves as a glaring reminder of the insensitivity and cruelty of some of our leaders. Her only “offense” was to voice the suffering of the masses under the relentless attacks of bandits a cry born out of desperation for change. Instead of addressing her concerns, the Sokoto State Government misused the police force, arresting and torturing her, leaving her in a critical condition.

This incident underscores a disturbing reality in Nigeria, the very police force meant to protect citizens and combat banditry is being used as a tool of oppression. Rather than focusing on ending the insecurity plaguing the state, they have shamefully targeted an innocent individual for daring to speak out. This unlawful act of brutality exposes the alarming level of impunity and lack of accountability in governance today.

Hamdiyya’s plight reflects the broader challenges Nigeria faces, including police brutality and the erosion of basic freedoms. Citizens are subjected to a draconian system of governance where dissent is ruthlessly silenced, particularly in Sokoto State, where the governor has become notorious for his high handedness and brutality against critics.

It is deeply troubling that the government, which has failed to provide essential services like security, healthcare, and education, continues to inflict further pain on its people through such acts of oppression. Instead of addressing the root causes of suffering, leaders like this governor are worsening the plight of the masses, exacerbating their despair.

This level of heartlessness and disregard for human rights cannot continue unchecked. The international community, including the International Court of Justice and world leaders, must intervene to protect Nigerians from these authoritarian rulers before they destroy the country completely.

We call for urgent action to hold these leaders accountable and to ensure justice for Hamdiyya and countless others who have suffered under this regime. The people of Nigeria deserve a government that listens, protects, and works for their welfare not one that silences, oppresses, and disregards their basic humanity.
