Though the pornography industry in Nigeria is mostly undertaken underground, the phallic industry hits $12million mark as 2024 winds down in few days.

The amount represents a significant growth of 22% from the 2023 revenue.

The porn industry in Nigeria is mainly transacted discreetly and all sorts of sex items are bought online. Only few off-the-shelves shops exist.

Online sites are patronized by Nigerians both males and females and of all ages to buy adult toys and others unimaginable stuffs such as sexual wellness products, vibrators, dildos, lubricants, bullet vibrators, AV Wands, clitoris vibrators, cock rings, masturbation cups, penis pumps and penis extenders among others.

These sites include among others: Jumia Nigeria, Justerotics, Sextoy9ja, Konga, MySexShop.ng, Intimate Pleasure Store, Naija Naughty Shop, Pleasure Shop Nigeria, Erotica Nigeria and Adult Store Nigeria.

According to internet sources, the adult entertainment industry in Nigeria is anticipated to experience progressive massive growth up till 2029 due to continuous large cyberspace penetration and the proliferation of digital platforms.

Besides, some multinational adult entertainment companies are considering establishing discreet operations in Nigeria due to a favourable population and growing digital engagement.

But, street prostitution in Nigeria operates within a complex legal and social framework as many cultures see it as a taboo.

However, the act itself is not explicitly illegal, associated activities such as operating brothels, pimping, and underage prostitution are prohibited under sections 223, 224 and 225 of the Nigerian Criminal Code.

Nevertheless, in many northern states, Sharia law operates and prostitution is outrightly banned.

Apex News Exclusive gathered from online sources that the exact size of the commercial sex industry in Nigeria is challenging due to its clandestine nature and lack of precise data.

However, some unverifiable data sourced gives some insight. According to it, there are an estimated 410, 000 sex workers in Nigeria in 2019, a huge increase from 103,500 in 2015.

The data shows that about two-thirds of sex workers began their profession before the age of 19, with a majority operating from brothels and about 88% work away from home in cities due to stigma.

Patronages of sex toys are more in Lagos and Abuja with increases in purchases during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown.

There are however, few patronages in most northern cities due their harsh cultural and religious norms.
