UNICAL to spotlight indigenous knowledge at global communication conference

University of Calabar (UNICAL) will host the 26th annual international conference of the African Council for Communication Education (ACCE), Nigeria chapter.
The conference with the theme ‘Communication and Indigenous Knowledge Systems in the Era of AI, Big Data, and Cultural Transformation’ is aimed uniting scholars, media professionals, and policymakers from across Africa and beyond.
A statement signed by Dr. Lawrence Ekwok, Chairman of the Organizing Committee, disclosed that the event will be organized by the Department of Mass Communication at UNICAL,
He said the event will explore the role and resilience of Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS) in an increasingly digital world.
“Discussions will span journalism, broadcasting, public relations, advertising, development communication, and media ethics.
“This conference will provide a crucial platform for academics and practitioners to examine how indigenous knowledge can coexist with emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence, Big Data, and Virtual Reality.”
Ekwok disclosed further that the ACCE has opened its call for abstracts, inviting researchers to contribute papers aligned with the conference’s 14 sub-themes.
He added that these sub-themes cover key areas including political communication, science communication, and the ethical challenges surrounding media and technology, cautioning that Abstracts should be maximum 250 words to accenigeriaconferences@gmail.com by August 24, 2025.
Also contributing, ACCE National Secretary, Dr. Ibituru Pepple, highlighted the relevance of the conference,
He said, “This event will challenge participants to think critically about the preservation and transformation of indigenous communication systems in a digitally driven world.”
The UNICAL-hosted conference aims to drive meaningful policy and academic conversations around integrating Indigenous Knowledge into contemporary communication frameworks.
