Gunfire erupts at Anambra festival as Police arrest suspect, recover weapons

A suspect was arrested and weapons seized following a shootout between Police and a criminal during the opening night of the Imo-Awka cultural festival in Awka, Anambra State.

The incident, which occurred late Monday, May 19, 2025, involved the Anambra State Police Command’s Rapid Response Squad (RRS) targeting suspected criminals using the festival as cover.

Police Spokesperson, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, stated that the RRS, acting on intelligence, conducted raids in known trouble spots.

One suspect, 25-year-old Nasiru Samaila, allegedly opened fire while attempting to escape and Police returned fire, injuring Samaila in the leg and effecting his arrest.

During the arrest, a locally made Beretta pistol, live ammunition, a knife, and suspected hard drugs were recovered. One police officer was also injured during the exchange but is reportedly recovering well.

The Police emphasized their commitment to a safe and peaceful festival, assuring continued surveillance and investigations.
