The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Cross River State, Venatius Ikem, has revealed that he was swayed by the communication skills of Mrs. Emana Ambrose-Amawhe—a former television broadcaster—when endorsing her as the party’s deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 elections.
Ikem admitted that Ambrose-Amawhe was not initially considered a preferred choice but had impressed him with her oratory, which he wrongly believed would be an asset to the party.
“She wasn’t on our scale of preference at all. But I take full responsibility for encouraging her emergence as running mate because I was a bit carried away by her communication skills,” Ikem said.
“I didn’t properly distinguish between a professional and a political asset.”
Mrs. Ambrose-Amawhe recently defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), a move that was publicly celebrated by the party’s leadership and supporters in Calabar.
Reacting to her defection, Ikem maintained that it has no significant impact on the PDP.
“Without sounding condescending, I can say with all confidence that her departure wasn’t much of a dent on the party,” he stated.
