Armed gunmen targeted a local vigilante facility in Umunze, Anambra State, early yesterday, killing one operative and setting fire to five vehicles.
The attack, believed to be on an Agunaechemba facility supported by the State government, occurred in the early morning hours.
Gunmen overwhelmed the vigilantes, causing a fatal exchange of gunfire.
The assailants also partially destroyed the security office. The motive for the attack remains unknown.
Anambra State Police confirmed the incident and appealed for public assistance in identifying the perpetrators.
Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu condemned the violence and stressed the importance of community cooperation in bringing the attackers to justice.
The Police have taken control of the scene and initiated an investigation.
