Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District Simon Lalong and Chairman Committee on Electoral Matters is optimistic of enhanced performance by INEC as it begins construction of new headquarters complex.

Senator Lalong who was among guests who attended the Flag Off Groundbreaking for the construction of New INEC Headquarters Office Complex in Abuja said the Commission needs work space that is in tandem with the demands of the season and the expectations of Nigerians.

This was contained in a statement by Dr. Makut Simon Macham, Special Adviser Media to Senator Lalong.

Lalong commended the President for bringing to reality the project that has been on the table for many years and said the headquarters when completed will ensure that the Commission delivers acceptable and reliable elections to Nigerians.

He assured that the national assembly and his Committee will continue to carry out oversight and ensure that the project is carried out within schedule and with appropriate funding.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu Tuesday, while performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the new headquarters annex building of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Abuja, said the event marks a major step toward solving the Commission’s long-standing office space problem.

In his speech, INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, expressed appreciation to the President for attending the event in person. He noted that the new building will help reduce the pressure on the current headquarters, which has become overcrowded over the years.

Yakubu said the current INEC headquarters, opened in December 1997, was designed for only eight commission members, 10 departments, and about 500 staff, but currently has 13 full-time members, 22 departments, and over 1,000 staff.

He thanked the National Assembly, FCT administration and other agencies for supporting the initiative.
