Benue killing: General Onoja calls for unity, support for gov’t to tackle insecurity

An elder Statesman and former Military Governor of Plateau and Katsina states, General Lawrence Onoja (rtd) has called on the people of Benue State to maintain vigilance in their various communities in the face of insecurity in parts of the state.
General Onoja condole the victims and families of those who lost their love ones in the recent attacks in Yelwata in Guma, as well as in Gwer West, Agatu, Apa, Otukpo and other communities in the state that has been under sporadic attacks from suspected terrorists and other criminal elements.
Condemning the recurring cycle of violence in parts of Benue State, he called on the people to remain calm, united and support Governor Hyacinth Alia and the relevant Federal government agencies to overcome the challenges while encouraging them that the government is working hard to prevent a recurrence of such incidence. He appreciates the recent visit of President Bola Tinubu to the state in the wake of the recent killings in Yelwata noting that the President by his visit to condole the people has demonstrated a will and determination to stamp out the menace.
Onoja urged the people to always assist security agencies with timely information whenever they notice suspicious individuals in their communities and remain law abiding adding that security is a collective role.
He commends the Tor Tiv, His Royal Majesty, Orchivirigh Prof. James Ayatse and the Och’Idoma, His Royal Majesty, Agabaidu Elaigwu Odogbo Obagaji John for their advisory roles and for being advocates of peace, unity and security in their domains while cautioning against politicizing the issue of insecurity.
General Onoja, who holds the revered Idoma traditional title of Okekela K’Idoma, was a one-time GOC 3 Armoured Division, Nigeria Army, Jos, Chief of Staff, State House, amongst other top federal and military appointments during his illustrious military career.
He is currently serving as the Chairman of the Governing Council, Federal Polytechnic Nasarawa State and is a passionate philanthropist.
