Al-Makura: A call to reposition the party on the right track
By Ifeanyi Nonso Ezedinma
History is replete with stories of men and women who have led transformative movements that brought about profound and lasting change not only for their immediate societies but also for generations yet unborn.
This narrative aptly captures the role that fate has bestowed upon His Excellency, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura. He has always stepped forward in moments of critical need, offering leadership when urgent and decisive action is required. That is precisely the situation in which our great party, the All Progressives Congress (APC), finds itself today.
It is no longer news that the APC is currently plagued by internal crises threatening to tear the party apart – crises that, if not urgently addressed, could severely undermine our prospects in the 2027 general elections.
The primary solution to the challenges facing the party lies in upholding justice, equity, and fairness, as already enshrined in the party’s zoning arrangement. The North Central zone has long been marginalized, both in party leadership and government appointments, despite its loyalty and contributions to the party , especially when compared with other zones that offered little or no support during the 2023 presidential election.
The exit of the outgoing National Chairman, Alhaji Umaru Ganduje, has created a golden opportunity to correct this imbalance and return the position of National Chairman to the North Central zone, where it was originally zoned. Thankfully, the North Central is richly endowed with capable men and women who can steer the APC to safe harbor ahead of the 2027 elections. Chief among them is H.E. Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura – a committed democrat and proven bridge builder, whose reputation transcends age groups, religious affiliations, and ethnic divides.
Indeed, the best remedy to the current challenges facing the APC is to entrust its leadership to Senator Al-Makura. He will not only work to resolve internal party disputes, but will also extend an olive branch to aggrieved members, particularly from the former CPC bloc across the North and other parts of the country. Most importantly, his leadership will give the long-denied North Central zone a rightful place at the top of the party’s hierarchy.
As one of the founding fathers of the APC, alongside President Bola Ahmed Tinubu (PBAT), former President Muhammadu Buhari, and other visionaries, Senator Al-Makura played a pivotal role in the formation of the party in 2014 , a party that made history by defeating an incumbent president for the first time in Nigeria’s democratic history.
This is a rare opportunity to reposition the APC on the path of progress, inclusiveness, and sustainable development. We cannot afford to miss it. Al-Makura as National Chairman will undoubtedly be the game-changer we need ahead of the 2027 general elections.
