2027: Senator Lalong assures legislative action towards credible elections

By Anthony Maliki, Abuja

Chairman Senate Committee on Electoral Matters and Senator representing Plateau South Senatorial District Simon Lalong has given assurances that the National Assembly will play its part in ensuring that Nigeria meets the expectations for credible general elections in 2027.

Senator Lalong was speaking at launch of the Credibility Threshold of the 2027 General Elections by the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room in Abuja.

Lalong who is Chairman of the Joint National Assembly Committee on Electoral Reforms said already, key issues requiring legislative action have been articulated and are undergoing critical review for consideration by the National Assembly.

He said the input of the civil society would be given due consideration when the amendment of the electoral act and the constitution begins.

Lalong commended the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room for its active participation in the Electoral process particularly in advocating for improvement in various areas of the democratic process.

Senator Lalong said without the Civil Society rising up to highlight issues that need review and improvement, Nigeria’s democracy would not have been as robust as it is at the moment.

Despite the progress made, Senator Lalong agrees with the proposals of the Civil Society that there are other areas that still need to be fine-tuned in order to have free, fair and credible elections in 2027 and beyond.

Convener of the Nigeria Civil Society Situation Room said the document is a result of the reviews and engagements of the previous elections which show that there are areas that need to be addressed for the country to have better elections that are acceptable among Nigerians and the international community.
