In a ceremony marked by unity and democratic grace, members of the Plateau State House of Assembly on Tuesday, July 2, officially presented their newly elected Speaker, Rt. Hon. Daniel Nanlong, to Governor Caleb Mutfwang for his blessing and formal recognition.
The 24-member delegation, led by Deputy Speaker, Rt. Hon. Madaki Ajiji, met with the Governor at his residence, following the peaceful and unanimous election of Nanlong as Speaker.
His emergence came after the voluntary resignation of Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan, who was praised for his selfless service and leadership.
Addressing the Governor, Deputy Speaker Ajiji highlighted the maturity and unity that characterized the transition.
“The election was conducted in a peaceful and rancour-free manner,” he said, underscoring the Assembly’s commitment to the stability and progress of Plateau State.
Governor Mutfwang, in his remarks, commended the lawmakers for setting a positive example in democratic conduct.
“Today is a day of joy for the people of Plateau State,” he said. “I want to sincerely thank Rt. Hon. Gabriel Dewan for his selfless service. He has shown true leadership and a deep understanding that power ultimately belongs to God.”
The Governor congratulated the new Speaker, describing him as a capable and experienced legislator.
He urged Nanlong to lead with fairness and humility. “You have all it takes to lead, but I urge you to carry everyone along,” Mutfwang stated. “Ensure inclusivity, fairness, and mutual respect in the discharge of your responsibilities.”
He reaffirmed the Executive’s commitment to a harmonious relationship with the legislature, emphasizing the need for a united front to deliver the dividends of democracy to the people.
Speaker Nanlong thanked the Governor for fostering a democratic environment free from interference or intimidation. “I will provide a leadership built on compassion, equity, and collective progress,” he pledged. “We shall run an inclusive House where every member’s voice matters.”
He assured the Governor and the people of Plateau State that the Assembly under his leadership would rise above personal interests and work collaboratively to promote peace, unity, and development across the state.
The visit marks a new chapter in legislative-executive relations in Plateau State, as both arms of government commit to working together for the common good of the state.
