At graduation ceremony, T-Royal School urged to embrace skills-based learning

The Guest Speaker Alhaji Abdullahi B. Zailani has called for a complete overhaul of Nigeria’s educational focus, stressing the need to move away from traditional classroom instruction to a system that equips students with practical skills, innovation, and self-reliance.

Speaking at the Graduation, Speech and Prize-Giving Day of T-Royal International School, where the school also launched its maiden magazine, Zailani warned that the conventional approach of cramming facts and figures into students is no longer sufficient in today’s rapidly changing world.

“The world is demanding more than just literacy and numeracy,” said Zailani, a former registrar at the Kaduna State College of Nursing and Midwifery. “Education should take students on a journey of self-discovery. It should help them uncover their uniqueness, not just repeat theories from textbooks.”

Delivering his keynote address on the theme “Skills Acquisition: A Paradigm Shift in Education”, he noted that nations globally are shifting focus toward vocational and technical education as the engine for youth empowerment and economic self-reliance.

Citing the National Policy on Education (2004), he emphasized the importance of equipping students with hands-on competencies in applied sciences, technology, and commerce. “Skills — whether technical, practical, or interpersonal — are not just tools for survival; they are assets for excellence,” he added.

Zailani also urged schools to adopt learner-centered approaches that encourage innovation and initiative. “In an era where change is constant, students must be empowered to think, create and adapt — not merely absorb.”

In his earlier remarks, Mr. Joel Olusayo Adegboyega, the Proprietor of T-Royal International School, described the theme as both timely and necessary.

“We live in a world where the emphasis is gradually shifting from paper qualifications to what individuals can offer practically,” Adegboyega said. “This school is sending out champions who are not only academically sound but spiritually grounded and socially conscious.”

The colourful event drew parents, dignitaries, and education stakeholders, featuring musical performances, drama presentations, award distributions, and the unveiling of the school’s first magazine — a publication showcasing student creativity and institutional milestones.

T-Royal International School continues to position itself as a forward-thinking institution, setting the pace in aligning education with 21st-century demands.
