Chief Tony Nezianya, Public Relations Officer of the Nigeria Olympic Committee (NOC) and veteran sports journalist, has been formally initiated into the revered Agbalanze Cultural Association of Onitsha Kingdom, Anambra State.
The induction, which took place at the Ime-Obi Ogbeoza Square, featured the traditional ‘Mmacha na Ozo’ (Public Dance of Initiation), after which Nezianya adopted the title “Ozomdioranma” (Ozoma), meaning a chief who enjoys the people’s approval.
Nezianya, who also served as a former Director at the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), described the honour as both a recognition of his contributions to Onitsha society and an encouragement to continue in service.
“I feel fulfilled to be among this distinguished group of accomplished individuals. The title ‘Ozomma’ reflects the wish of the people, and I am committed to giving my best to Onitsha and beyond,” he said.
The event attracted prominent personalities including Ezennia Onyechi Ikpeazu (SAN), a long-standing Agbalanze member, Justice Onyinye Anumonye, an Anambra State High Court judge, and Chief Anali Chude, former Attorney-General of Anambra State.
In his remarks, Chief Nnaemeka Maduegbuna, communication expert and public relations guru, said Nezianya’s initiation was symbolic of his elevated status in Onitsha.
“Ozoma has become not only a man of means but also a priestly figure with social, political, and spiritual responsibilities in the community,” he stated.
Former Commissioner for Justice, Chief Chudi Anali, also commended Nezianya, noting that his intellectual depth and professional contributions to journalism made him highly deserving of the prestigious honour.
Nezianya’s wife of 33 years, Mrs. Philomena Nezianya, expressed pride in her husband’s achievement and pledged her support as he embraces the responsibilities that come with the title.
The Agbalanze society, one of the most respected traditional institutions in Onitsha, plays vital roles in community administration, preservation of culture, conflict resolution, and spiritual guidance. Membership is regarded as a mark of distinction and social responsibility.
With this induction, Nezianya joins the ranks of Onitsha’s elite cultural custodians, marking a new chapter of honour and service for his family lineage.
