Governor Chukwuma Charles Soludo was visibly emotional on Thursday, October 30, when a group of market women in Idemili South Local Government Area of Anambra State presented him with a ₦50,000 donation to support his re-election campaign.
The touching moment occurred in Ojoto, the council headquarters, during Soludo’s campaign tour ahead of the November 8 governorship election. The elderly women, mainly petty traders, took the stage to announce their collective contribution, which they described as a token of appreciation for the governor’s people oriented policies.
Speaking on behalf of the group, one of the women said they felt it would be unfair not to show their gratitude after benefiting from Soludo’s initiatives including free education, free healthcare for women and children, and improved road infrastructure across the State.
“Governor Soludo has eased our burden by providing free education for our children and free medical care for mothers. What we have given is small compared to what we’ve gained,” she said. “Our donation represents our collective endorsement of his leadership. We will also mobilize our families and friends to vote for him on election day.”
Deeply moved by the gesture, Soludo thanked the women and described their support as unprecedented.
“What we’re witnessing in this campaign is extraordinary,” he said. “Communities and individuals are sponsoring their own rallies and paying their own bills. Now even market women and traders are contributing. This shows that people are happy with what we’re doing.”
He assured the crowd that his administration would double its efforts if given another term.
“The next four years will bring massive transformation. You’ve not seen anything yet,” he added.
The Governor also appealed to Idemili South residents to come out en masse on November 8, lamenting that the area had underperformed in voter turnout despite its strong population.
“This time, let’s vote in large numbers,” he said. “Our party has even introduced a voter participation competition communities with higher voter turnout will be rewarded.”
Hon. Ikenna Iyiegbu, Chairman of the APGA campaign council in Idemili South and brother to businessman Obi Cubana, pledged full support for Soludo’s re-election.
“I demolition South will back Soludo to finish his projects and sustain the power rotation that brings the governorship back to Anambra Central,” he said.
House of Assembly member Hon. Ebuka Igwe, LGA Mayor Hon. Amaka Obi, and several community leaders also spoke, promising massive votes for the Governor in appreciation of his developmental strides.
Obi described the upcoming election as a “day of payback,” saying: “Soludo executed all his projects without borrowing. Our people will speak with one voice on November 8.”
During the event, several communities and organizations contributed financially to the campaign: Ojoto community: ₦30 million (cheque), Akwukwu community: ₦20 million and Newly recruited teachers (PPSSC & ASUBEB): ₦825,000
A group representing over 35,000 scrap dealers and scavengers across Anambra also credited Soludo for improving their livelihoods through state-supported training and empowerment initiatives.
Dr. Vera Nwadinobi, Chairman of the Anambra State Universal Basic Education Board (ASUBEB), assured that teachers, market women, and youths would vote massively for Soludo and protect their votes.
Similarly, Speaker of Idemili South Councilors’ Congress, Rt. Hon. Ernest Ezeonyim, expressed confidence that Soludo would return to the Government House to complete his transformation agenda.
“In 2021, Idemili South didn’t give him enough votes. This time, we’re giving him one hundred percent,” he declared.
