North Central Development Commission eyes tele-medicine for improved healthcare delivery

The North Central Development Commission (NCDC) has expressed readiness to harness the vast opportunities in tele-medicine and digital health access as part of its strategy to accelerate healthcare interventions across the North Central region.

Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Commission, Dr. Cyril Yiltsen Tsenyil, gave the indication during a private sector stakeholders’ engagement roundtable on Tele-medicine and Digital Health Access in Africa.

The event was hosted by MySmartMedic at the Uniccon Group Office in Abuja.

Dr. Tsenyil said the NCDC remains committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen healthcare infrastructure, empower health workers through digital training, and enhance last-mile connectivity in unserved communities across the region.

He noted that the growing opportunities in tele-medicine and digital healthcare delivery present a unique window for the North Central to adopt innovative solutions capable of addressing the significant healthcare gaps in both urban and rural areas.

According to him, the Commission is ready to collaborate closely with organisations such as Uniccon Group to leverage technology in improving access, affordability, and quality of healthcare services for the people.

Chairman of Uniccon Group, Prof. Chucks Ekwueme, said smart medicine is rapidly transforming healthcare across Africa, and Nigeria must demonstrate leadership by adopting digital health innovations.

He highlighted opportunities in tele-medicine, digital health platforms, electronic medical records, mobile health applications, and AI-supported diagnostics, noting that these innovations have the potential to significantly improve lives.

Prof. Ekwueme expressed readiness to partner with institutions like the NCDC to ensure that Nigerians, particularly those in the North Central zone, fully benefit from the growing advancements in digital health.

The Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, represented by Dr. Olubumi Ajala, National Director, Centre for Artificial Intelligence and Robotics, reaffirmed President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to transforming medical care in Nigeria through the development of robust ICT infrastructure that supports tele-medicine and related services.

The event was formally unveiled by the NCDC Managing Director, assisted by the Managing Director of the Chad Basin Development Authority, Tijjani Tumsah and other dignitaries.
