The Director-General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), Dr. Silas Ali Agara, has called for sustained support for the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) in its efforts to tackle flood disasters in the country.
Agara made this appeal during the official launch of a fundraising event for flood preparedness in Nigeria, held at the Nigerian Air Force Conference Centre in Kado, Abuja.
In his goodwill speech, the NDE DG lamented the devastating effects of flood disasters, which often destroy small businesses and wipe out farmlands.
He noted that NIHSA is playing a pivotal role in protecting the environment, safeguarding jobs, supporting small enterprises, stabilizing rural economies, and preserving the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians.
Agara emphasized that investing in NIHSA is investing in environmental security, social stability, and sustainable national development, urging key stakeholders to support the initiative.
The Director-General of NIHSA, Alh. Umar Ibrahim Mohammed, described the event as essential for raising funds for comprehensive flood and erosion control in Nigeria, soliciting the support of all stakeholders.
The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) plays a crucial role in managing Nigeria’s water resources, focusing on hydrological and hydrogeological data collection, analysis, and dissemination.
The agency operates a nationwide network of hydrological stations, monitoring river flows, water levels, and other critical parameters to support developmental projects and environmental protection.
The agency’s responsibilities include groundwater exploration and monitoring, flood control, and drought mitigation.
NIHSA also provides critical data for planning, designing, and managing water resources and related projects, such as irrigation, flood control, and water supply systems.
