The Director General of the National Directorate of Employment (NDE), H.E. Silas Agara, has highlighted the pressing issue of youth unemployment in Nigeria, where over 20 million youths are estimated to be in need of skills development.

With 60 percent of this population characterized as energetic, Agara stressed the urgent need for collaboration between the NDE and the Nigerian Institute of Training and Development (NITD) to meet the aspirations of these young individuals.

During a meeting held at the NDE’s national headquarters in Abuja with a delegation from the NITD on Thursday, Agara pointed out that although the youth population is vast, the resources available to mentor them in acquiring essential skills are severely limited.

He warned that this situation poses a significant risk, suggesting that the country is standing on a “time bomb” that could have explosive repercussions if left unaddressed.

“The resources to cater to the needs of our youth are limited, which clearly indicates that we must act,” Agara stated.

“We need to equip our youth not only to contribute to the national economy but also to achieve economic independence.”

The NDE, recognized as a hub of employment opportunities, has been attracting the attention of both national and international agencies that share the common goal of providing entrepreneurial skills to Nigeria’s unemployed youth.

Agara believes that such collaborations are imperative in addressing the urgent needs of Nigerian youth.

Describing the visit from NITD as “timely,” Agara noted the shared objectives of both organizations, stating, “We are open to collaboration in view of the fact that there is ability and strength in synergy. Despite our limited resources, we remain undeterred in our commitment to combat unemployment in Nigeria, as this is not just a local issue; it is a global challenge.”

Earlier, Mr. Bulus James, the leader of the NITD delegation, expressed gratitude to Agara for his ongoing dedication to advocating for the rights and well-being of Nigerian youths.

He described their visit as an opportunity to explore synergies with the NDE that could pave the way for a more promising future for Nigeria’s youth.
