The Chairman of Jema’a Local Government Area of Kaduna State, Hon. Peter Tanko Dogara, has reaffirmed that providing access to quality education is a core responsibility of government, not a privilege extended to citizens.

Dogara made this assertion on Tuesday at the flag-off of the 2025/2026 WAEC sponsorship scheme for 250 students in the area. The ceremony took place at Government Girls Secondary School, Takau, Jema’a LGA.

Speaking at the event, the council chairman described education as the most reliable tool for empowerment and long-term community development. He said the local government was aware of the financial challenges facing many parents and guardians, noting that the sponsorship scheme was introduced to ease the burden of examination fees and ensure equal access to education.

He expressed appreciation to Kaduna State Governor, Senator Uba Sani, and parents in the area for their sustained commitment to education, and urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the opportunity by excelling in their examinations.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Humanitarian Affairs, Kaduna State, Comrade Yunana Barde, commended the state government and the Jema’a LGA chairman for what he described as a compassionate intervention targeted at supporting vulnerable students. He advised the beneficiaries to be worthy ambassadors of the local government by studying hard.

In his welcome address, the Vice Chairman of Jema’a LGA and Chairman of the Scholarship Committee, Mr. Emmanuel Utung, said the beneficiaries were selected based on clearly defined criteria, including indigene status, vulnerability, academic performance, and financial need. He urged the students to utilise the funds strictly for the payment of their examination fees.

Also speaking, the Education Secretary of Jema’a LGA, Mr. Taen Audu Dogara, lauded the council chairman for placing education at the centre of governance and encouraged the students to remain focused and committed to their academic goals.

In a goodwill message, a representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Jema’a LGA, Mr. Emmanuel Badau, thanked the council leadership and prayed for the success of ongoing development programmes in the area.

Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, Benedicta Boniface expressed gratitude to the council chairman and pledged that the students would justify the support through improved academic performance.

Apex News Exclusive reports that each of the 250 beneficiaries received ₦35,000 to cover their WAEC examination fees.
