The Controller of Corrections, Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Anambra State Command, CC Ike Aslem, has reminded newly promoted officers that their advancement comes with higher expectations, calling on them to show renewed commitment and accountability in their duties.

Aslem gave the charge during the decoration ceremony of 59 officers at the command headquarters. The event was attended by the Commissioner of Police in Anambra State, Ikioye Orutugu, representatives of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), other security agencies, as well as family members of the promoted officers.

Those decorated included two Assistant Comptrollers of Corrections, three Chief Superintendents of Corrections, 11 Superintendents, and 19 Deputy Superintendents. Others were 11 Assistant Superintendents I, four Assistant Superintendents II, three Chief Correctional Assistants, four Senior Correctional Assistants, and two Correctional Assistants II.

Addressing the officers, Aslem stressed that promotion comes with increased responsibilities, urging them not to take their new ranks lightly.

“Promotion comes from God, but once you are elevated, your responsibilities automatically increase. You must justify your salary and position, and you cannot afford to joke with your job,” he said.

He warned officers against truancy and any form of indiscipline, noting that their new ranks demand higher standards of conduct and professionalism.

While congratulating the officers, the Controller described them as privileged, adding that he considered himself fortunate to have supervised the decoration of 59 promoted officers within just eight months of assuming office.

Also speaking at the event, Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu cautioned the officers against indiscipline, emphasizing the need for obedience to lawful orders and respect for authority.

“In the Police, you can be promoted today and demoted tomorrow. Your promotion must therefore be sustained through discipline and respect for rules,” he said.

Orutugu also highlighted the importance of officers being accompanied by their spouses during promotion ceremonies, describing the occasion as symbolic and memorable.

“Decoration day is like a wedding day. Even if couples are quarrelling, they must appear together. Officers should always attend such important ceremonies with their spouses to share in the honour,” he added.
