The Nigeria Union of Journalists, (NUJ), Anambra State Council has enjoined the state Police Command, the DSS, and other security agencies to do all they can in unraveling the circumstances behind the disappearance of a journalist with the National Light Newspapers, Mr. Matthew Onwuasoanya.
The 49-year-old journalist and lawyer, was said to have been whisked off from his residence at Nise, Awka South, on May 30, 2020, by some armed men, dressed in security outfit, that were in a convoy of vehicles.
Rising from its State Working Committee and stakeholders meeting in Awka, the NUJ, Anambra Council, also called on members of the public who has useful information that will lead to the whereabout of the missing journalist to reach out to the security agencies in the state.
In a communiqué signed by the Chairman of the State Council of NUJ, Comrade Emma Ifesinachi, and Secretary, Comrade Emma Udeagha, the NUJ, frowned at the unfortunate incident, wondering why journalists who disseminate news and vital information should become victims of kidnap, either for ransom or to settle scores.
The communiqué noted that the said Mr Onwuasoanya was a quiet individual, and not generally known for controversy.
The abducted journalist hails from Awba Ofemili, in Awka North Local Government Area of Anambra State.
