Drivers, seafarers commend security in Cross River

By Akpan David, Calabar

Marine workers, seafarers and motorists have commended the recent improrvemen in security of lives and property on the waterways as well as in the city of Calabar.

They said crimes have apparently abated following Governor Ben Ayade’s all out attack on persons involved in criminality.

According to the state chairman of Unified Commercial Taxi and Bus Drivers Association, Pastor Thomas Effiong Okon, criminal elements both on the waterways and in the neighborhoods have gone into hiding following the launch of Operation Apakwu, a determined security outfit, two months ago by the governor.

He commended Ayade and heads of security agencies in the state for stepping up their acts in the state.

“I am a Calabar South resident and that was the hub of almost all the security crises but for the past days, we have had relative peace as there has been no incidence of kidnapping or hijack of some sorts. So operation Akpakwu has done a lot. You know security is a thing that needs constant improvement but so far they have done a lot. For me, they have met atleast 80% of our security expectations in the state,”

Okon spoke to Journalists in Calabar during an interview, saying even the pirates are very cautious as Operation Apakwu also extend its dragnets in the waterways.

Also Speaking, another resident, Comrade Ekpenyong Akiba was full of praises for Ayade for “bringing Operation Akpakwu to secure lives and property in calabar.

“The efforts of Operation Akpakwu have been fantastic and they have done marvelously well, we have seen the improvement in security in the state and the spate of kidnapping has reduced to the barest minimum. We can now sleep with our eyes closed.

Dr Alfred Mboto permanent secretary State Security Services in the governor’s office, who is also the coordinator of Operation Apakwu, they have a mandate to return Calabar to its once serene and peaceful status.
