The Diocese of Nnewi, Anglican Communion has rolled out a week-long programme to celebrate its 25 years of existence as a Diocese.
The pioneer Bishop of the Diocese, Archbishop (Prof) Godwin Okpala and the incumbent Bishop, Rt. Rev. Ndubuisi Obi at Bishop’s Court, Nnewi announced this to newsmen.
Archbishop Okpala noted that the Diocese had contributed to the physical and spiritual growth of Nnewi and environs since inception.
“The Diocese was created in 1996 from a decade of evangelism that was declared in 1990, which led to creation of dioceses across the country.
“We started with four Archdeaconries but have 24 archdeaconries today. We appreciate the individuals who supported the Diocese from the formative stages to present day,” he added.
Bishop Obi, who became the 2nd Bishop of the Diocese, last year commended his predecessor for the giant strides made by the Diocese under his watch.
“I am proud and passionately committed to all the projects initiated by my predecessor.
“With God on my side, I hope to continue to build a Diocese every member will be proud of,’’ he vowed.
Bishop Obi explained that a day had been set aside for a political symposium, where the people of the Diocese would be educated on the need to actively participate in politics.
“On Thursday, we will have voter education; It is important for everyone to actively participate in politics to avoid crying about marginalisation.
“I am ready to support as many people as possible in my Diocese to go into politics; even if a priest wants to contest the governorship election, we will support him.
“The only thing is that we will take the parish that he is overseeing from him.’’
Programmes for the silver jubilee celebration would be celebrated between Feb. 15 and Feb. 21 with special thanksgiving service and recognition of some individuals.
