Centre, Kaduna human services ministry take sexual, gender-based violence advocacy to chiefdoms

Salama Sexual Assault Referral Center (SARC) Kafanchan, in partnership with Kaduna State Ministry of Human Services and Social Development have taken a sensitization campaign on zero tolerance on sexual and gender based violence to six chiefdoms,12 political wards in Jema’a local government area of Kaduna State.

The advocacy visit was a support from Nigeria Early Recovery Initiative (NERI-USAID).

Speaking on Services and Types of Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV), Salama Centre Manager, Mrs Grace Yohanna Abbin, said their vision is to attain a Society Free from all forms of Sexual and Gender Based Violence with the collaboration of every stakeholder.

While emphasising on the need for Prevention, Protection and Accountability, said the center cannot work alone except with strong collaboration through the response team and the corporation of the newly formed Support Actors of the SGBV members.

Abbin said the center recorded 1, 162 cases on different types of Sexual and Gender Violence as at April, 2021, adding that women and children are mostly affected.

“In 2019 when the Centre was opened we had 219 reported cases, in 2020 we recorded 582 and now from January to April 30th, we have 361 making 1,162.

“By gender, we have 987 female and 175 male, by age we have 238 under 17 Children, 924 above 18 adult and by type of Assaults/Violence we have 180 rape cases among whom 124 are children,” she added.

Dr Gideon Goje, the Centre Medical Director, clarified on the need for early reporting to avoid negative impacts on the Survivor. “It’s cheaper, safer and better to report early, but dangerous and expensive to report late,” he said.

Participants were selected from every ward, and other stakeholders from the Nigeria Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, Vigilante, DSS, media, religious, traditional, women, and youth leaders as well as health workers, as Support Actors for Zero Tolerance on Sexual and Gender Based Violence members in the LGA.
