Bauchi converts 35 boarding schools to 24 merit schools to improve standard of secondary education

In its bid to improve the standard of education in the State and make it more accessible to its children, Bauchi State Ministry of Education has, following an approval granted by the State Executive Council on 8th February 2020, collapsed the 35 boarding schools under its management into 24 Model Schools in line with the recommendations of the 2019 Transition Sub-Committee on Education.
With this development, children in boarding schools will study under better conditions of learning and welfare, communities will be availed with more admission opportunities for their children in day schools and government will get better value for money. 
As contained in a general circular signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Dr. Sule A. Madara, in the restructuring, care is taken to safeguard and balance the interests of communities, children and the Government.
In order to ensure smooth running of schools and provision of good welfare to students, all the first and second-generation boarding schools have been retained as Merit Schools. 
Among the third generation boarding schools that are designed as Day Schools with little or no boarding facilities at all, those at Bogoro, Liman Katagum, Duguri, Burra and Dambam have been maintained as boarding schools. 
The rest revert to their Day status in which children from immediate and surrounding communities will be admitted in their hundreds while the boarding secondary schools at itas requires extensive rehabilitation to make it habitable to students as its students have been transferred to Disina while the facilities will be used as Day students.
All the 8 girls’ boarding secondary schools have maintained their boarding status just as the two Exchange Schools in Bauchi town, the two Arabic Colleges at Alkaleri and Jama’are and the Special Education Centre in Bauchi are also maintained as boarding schools while the four boarding schools under Special Schools Management Board are not affected by the restructuring
According to the circular made available to our Correspondent, the 24 Merit Schools are: Alkaleri GGAC; Azare GGC; Bauchi GGC; Bauchi GHUKUC; Bauchi SEC; Bogoro GSS; Burra GSS; Dambam GSS; Darazo GSS and Dass GSSS. 
Others are :Disina GSS; Duguri GSS; Gamawa GSSS; Gamawa GTC; Gumau GTC; Hardawa GGSS; Jama’are GAC; Liman Katagum GGSS; Misau GSSS; Nabordo GGC: Ningi GSS; Tafawa Balewa GGSS; Toro GSS and Yana GGSS. 
Approval has also been given by the Governor during the last academic year for the transfer of the two Government Technical Colleges at Gamawa and Gumau to Special Schools Management Board.
Of the de-boarded schools, students of GSS Bununu are transferred to GSSS Dass, GSS Dagauda to GSS Dambam, GSS Giade to GSS Misau, Itas GSS to GSS Disina, GSS Katagum to GSSS Gamawa, GSS Kirfi to GSS Duguri, GSS Madara and GSS Chinade to GSSS Misau, GSS Sade to GSSS Darazo, GSS Udubo to GSS Gamawa and GSS Warji to GSS Ningi while the former boarding schools will now operate as day secondary schools.
The transfer of students is with immediate effect while transferred students can resume directly to their new schools and if they have reported to their old schools, the Ministry has provided for transport money that will convey them to their new schools.
Principals of deboarded schools will prepare to receive day students of their respective communities in conjunction with the Ministry while the resumption date of all primary and secondary schools in Bauchi State is 27th September 2021. Boarding students are expected to report a day earlier just as arrangement for their feeding has been completed.
Meanwhile, after consultation with 18 categories of stakeholders on 23 September, 2021, the Ministry of Education has arrived at the school calendar for 2021/2022 academic session. 

According to the 2021/2022 SCHOOL CALENDAR: 1st Term will run from 27 Sep 2021 to 18 Dec 2021 with CLOSING DATE ob 17 Dec 2021 to Jan 2022, 2nd term will run from 9th Jan 2022 to 9 Apr 2022 while holiday will run from 8th April 2022 to 7 May 2022, 3rd Term will run from  8 May 2022 to 13 Aug 2022 while holiday will be from 12 Aug 2022 to 24 Sep 2022 just as the 2022 ACADEMIC SESSION 1st Term will run from 25 Sep 2022 to 16 Dec 2022.
