By Samuel Torlumun
Foremost Civil society organisation in Nigeria, the Save Nigeria Movement (SNM) has reacted to media reports in some sections of the media, insisting the reports were not only fake but also an embarassment to the media and Nigerians.
Recall that Amb Buratai during a lecture delivered at the Moddibo Adama University of Technology Yola as consistent with patriots shared his vast experience in the military and diplomatic circuits on sustainable development in Nigeria. Lt Gen Turkur Buratai rtd is the immediate past chief of army staff who was recently appointed ambassador to Benin Republic among many others.
“Addressing Journalist in Abuja on Saturday, SNM convener Rev Semaka Solomon said God has used the fake reports to confirm that indeed until the “media” is censored, irresponsible journalism will one day put the country and continent on fire”
“Let us reproduce the summary of the lecture in Amb Buratai’s words “
“Our security situation requires synergy, political will, sacrifice among government, civil society, traditional rulers and religious as well as all stakeholders to enhance conflict resolution “
Amb Buratai further summarised the entire lecture by saying
“Central to the subject matter in this paper is that security and development is a requirement for stabilisation”
.
But come to think of it, is there any country on earth where leaders ever get tired of more development? Infact that is right to do, to offer solutions” Rev Semaka noted.
Citing the misleading manner Amb Buratai’s convocation lecture was reported as one such reasons why the media should be properly censored”
“How can any responsible media organisation choose to twist opinions expressed in total display of loyalty and dedication to the country by our best brains just to achieve political gains?
” Gen Turkur Buratai was specific on the need for synergy between all stakeholders in order to enhance sustainable development in the country and continent”
The group wondered that if Amb Buratai lecture note could be twisted with such impunity to mislead nigerians, then country needs to rise up to the occasion before”fake” news destroys the country.
“Gen Turkur Buratai since assumption of responsibility in Benin Republic has been sharing his military experience across various diplomatic and academic platforms for the future of our country and continent” Rev Semaka insisted that political interests which justifies this kind of mischievous and irresponsible journalism has to be moderated before we can achieve any meaningful development”
The group further said it had deposed to an affidavit of verification to expose the misleading headlines just to show nigerians the lack of credibility in the system.
‘The group urged Ambassador Buratai to continue to share his intellectual capital so as to fast track development. It urged him not to be distracted as he is now an international asset.
