Police Inspector shoots, injures tanker driver in Gombe, disarmed, arrested by Police Command as government calls for calm

A trigger happy Policeman serving with the Gombe State Command, Inspector Urbanus Ishaku has allegedly shot and injured a tanker driver following an argument at a checkpoint.

Consequently, the erring officer has been disarmed and arrested by the State Police Command as directed by the Commissioner of Police, Ishola Babaitan after confirming that the for shooting incident occurred in Dukku town along the Gombe-Dukku-Darazo expressway.

Public Relations Officer of of the State Police Command, SP Mary Obed Malum disclosed this in a press release issued to Journalists Monday afternoon stating that the incident occurred earlier in the day.

She revealed that the victim was shot on his buttock saying the Command responded immediately it got the information by quickly disarming the officer involved as provided for in Police statutes.

Aside the disarmament, Mary Malum said that the Officer is currently under interrogation promising that justice would be done to the matter.

Meanwhile, other lorry and tanker drivers blocked the road where the incident occurred in protest against the action of the Policeman but were later persuaded by the government and other stakeholders before vacating the road.

Meanwhile, the state government has appealed for calm pending the outcome of investigation into the matter urging those concern to allow government handle the issue.

While addressing newsmen on behalf of the government, Commissioners of Information and Culture, Julius Ishaya Lepes as well as that of Internal Security, Adamu Kupto said that the driver is currently receiving treatment in a medical facility in the state capital.

They however called on the aggrieved parties to exercise patience as the issue would be probed to ascertain the actual thing that led to the shooting.

It was reliably gathered that there was misunderstanding between the Police officer and the driver at a checkpoint on the road leading to the shooting of the driver by the trigger happy Policeman who could not control himself with the gun in his hand.
