Maternal Newborn and Child Healthcare Week: Bauchi targets 1.5m children, 100,000 pregnant women

Dr Rilwanu Mohammed flagging off the week assisted by the representative of the First Lady

Not fewer than 1.5 million children and over 100, 000 pregnant women have been targeted to be reached for various medical interventions during the 2022 Maternal Newborn and Child Healthcare (MNCH) week in Bauchi state. 

The disclosure was made by the Executive Chairman, State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (BASPHCDA) Dr. Rilwanu Muhammad during the official Flagging off ceremony of the week held at Yelwa Domicilliary Primary healthcare center in Bauchi Local government area. 

Rilwanu Muhammad said that the week involves vitamin A supplementation, deworming, Routine immunization, Rotavirus vaccine administration and other medical consultation. 

He added that children under the age of five as well as pregnant women are the main beneficiaries of the interventions. 

The Executive Chairman opined that the week is been observe twice a year between every months of May and June and is part of the federal government’s high integrated intervention aimed at reducing maternal morbidity and mortality in the country. 

In his remarks, The supervising Commissioner of Health, Ali Babayo Gamawa disclosed that the ward minimum health care package and the integrated maternal, new-born, and child initiative were introduced by the Federal Government but with limited success. 

Represented by Dr. Robinson Yusuf, The commissioner explained that the move was to improve nutritional status of both the mother its and child. 

Also speaking the wife of the state Governor who was represented by state Commisoner of Small and medium Enterprises Sa’adatu Bello kirfi echoed that the week is an avenue to educate women on how to use available local foods to prepare nutritional meal for infants and themselves.  

In a vote of thanks, the District Head of Miri, Alhaji Hussaini Abubakar Uthman commended the state government for priotizing the healthcare sector of the state and urged mothers to grab the  opportunity with two hands.
