An NGO, Breakthrough ACTION Nigeria (BA-N) has called for an improved access to and uptake of girl child-centered education.
In a statement signed to mark this year’s International Girl Child Day, Programme officer, Mrs Nkoyo Umoh said the girl child needs mentorship, improved access to information supports and guidance.
The statement stressed that the girls child needs services related to achieving full education from primary to tertiary level.
She encouraged guardians and parents to ensure that the girl child is mentored to abstain from sexual activities until age of maturity and with the husband.
The statement encourage the society to rise above gender norms & stereotypes which often plagued the girl child, and wants the girl child to be taught about menstrual cycle, personal hygiene, building self-esteem and navigating peer pressure.
Some of their key messages which they want the society to be conscious of include: Every Girl Child has the right to a safe, educated, and healthy life.
All girl children have the potential to change the world. Every girl child dreams of a happy, healthy, safe, and progressive existence. Save the Girl Child to Save the World!
“On this International Day of the Girl Child, we celebrate the girl child for her value, her resilience, and her power to change the world.
“The time indeed is now, to uphold her rights and make valuable investments for her future.
“We recognize the urgent need to hear the voices of young women and girls and affirm that greater progress is possible when girls are given equal opportunities and an enabling environment that upholds their rights and protects them from all forms of violence.”
