Former Vice Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, Professor Mahadi has died

Professor Abdullahi Mahadi, the former Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University and lately Gombe State University, has died.

Late Professor who was a historian and educationist was born in December I945 in Kiva, Gwoza Local Government Area of Borno State.

He started his formal education at Warrabe Primary School, Gwoza Central School, Government Craft School, Maiduguri, Mubi Teachers’ College and Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He was Asst. Headmaster, Gadamayo Primary School, Gwoza, 1967; Headmaster, Hambagda Primary School, 1968 and Assistant Education Officer, North-Eastern Government, 1971.

Professor Mahafi started working with Ahmadu Bello University as Senior Lecturer in History in 1984; he became a Professor and Director of Arewa House, Kaduna in 1987 and Vice Chancellor of Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria. After his tenure he was appointed as Vice Chancellor of Gombe State University. He is a member of International Historical Demography.

He was awarded The African Graduate Fellowship, 1982/83. publ: History of Nigeria for Schools and Colleges, Books I-II,

He co-author, (Longman, 1988), Nigerian Society and Economy Since the Berlin Conference, Volomes. I and II, editor, (Zaria, Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Publication, Ahmadu Bello University, 1988).

His hobbies are, reading and jogging.

His relation, Alhaji Hamidu Buba Fulka prayed for the repose of the soul of the Educationist. “He died in Gombe and was buried According to Islamic injunctions. We are praying for the repose of his soul.”

Professor Rafindadi, the former CMD of Ahmadu Bello University Teaching Hospital, Shika, Zaria pray for the repose of the soul of the late Professor Abdullahi Mahadi.

Ina her condolence message, Professor of Broadcasting, Professor ABU Ladi Sandra Adamu Sa’id ” Prof Mahadi was my academic mentor who gave me the insight of Research and encouraged me to be a lecturer.

“It was during his tenure as Vice Chancellor that I began my career as a lecturer in Ahmadu Bello University as a lecturer in the Department of Mass Communication.

The Idea to write a book on my late father Capt Adamu Pankshin: The Soldier’s Soldier was Professor Mahadi’s brain child when he was Director of Arewa House, Kaduna. He wrote the foreword of my book Hafsatu Ahmadu Bello: The Unsung Heroine. He encouraged me to handle the sources of information on both books with care. He was really a great scholar. May Allah forgive his shortcomings. He is greatly missed.”

Professor Mahadi will be remembered for encouraging labourers to register for adult clases that led many to become graduates and for the environmental upgrade of the university.
