GIFSEP presents climate change policy to Nasarawa Government

Global Initiative for Food Security and Ecosystem Preservation (GIFSEP), an NGO, on Friday presented climate change policy to the Nasarawa State Government after undergone thorough review by relevant stakeholders.
Mr David Michael, Executive Director, GIFSEP made the presentation to the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Yakubu Kwanta on behalf of the state government in Lafia.
According to him, all the relevant stakeholders from Nasarawa state and line ministries, departments and agencies were engaged in the review of the draft document where they made necessary inputs before the final publication.
He explained that the importance of climate change policy could not be over emphasised, given the impact of climate in agriculture, environment, hence the need to have policy to help in building resilience.
“You can see the effect of climate change in the country, Nasarawa state suffered greatly from the 2022 flood, of course we that climate change is impacting the state in agriculture and water.
“We are delighted that Nasarawa state is taking this step to have this policy, and it our hope that once the process is completed for the state it should be implemented so that some of this climate change issues Wii be addressed.
“It is a great way to start climate action for the year for us as an organisation, I want to thank GIFSEP staff, our partner, Oxfam International who through AACJ project provided funding that helped to complete this work,” he said.
Mr Yakubu Kwanta, Nasarawa state Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, while receiving the climate change policy on behalf of the state government thanked the GIFSEP for the job well done.
He assured sustainable support and partnership, while expressing hope that climate change policy would create national and international synergy for the state in a positive way.
“You are a worthy partner of Nasarawa state, I want to assure you of continuous support, putting policy, a very strong instrument that will stand the test of time is something that gladdens our hearts,”he said.
He promised to present the climate change policy to Gov Abdullahi Sule ,and also to explained to him what the GIFSEP was able to achieve for the state in the last one year before taking it to the state Ministry of Justice.
