Abakiliki Catholic Diocese set to float university

As the quest by churches to set up own universities spreads, the Catholic Diocese of Abakiliki in Ebonyi State has completed plan to join the league of University proprietors.

The Catholic Bishop of Abakiliki Diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Peter Nworie Chukwu, stated this when the Abakiliki Catholic Community in Onitsha and environs hosted him at SS John and Paul Parish, Iba Pope, Awada, a suburb of Onitsha in Anàmbra State.

Addressing the obviously elated Catholic community during the reception for him held immediately after Mass, Bishop Nworie said the university named , Twelve Apostles University has been inspected by a team from National University Commiasion (NUC).

He hoped that the university that situated in 103 acres of land would get the nod of NUC very soon.

The Bishop also said that to the admiration of hosts that the diocese is building radio and television stations of their own which would soon commence transmission.

He said that the diocese would soon take delivery of other dioceses in the State with Afikpo diocese taking off very soon.

In addition, said the Bishop Nworie, more parishes d were being created in the diocese within Abakiliki urban.

The Bishop said that they have plan to build airport chaplaincy, which 54 plots of land have been acquired along the New Airport Road in Abakiliki.

The diocese. said the Bishop, is equally building a large retreat centre that can accommodate many people who want to have retreats or conferences in the centre.

He however urged them to continue to be good ambassadors of Ebonyi System and good citizen in Anambra State by work hard in their businesses and careers, eschew every form of crime and criminality but told them to always remember to touch base from time to time.

He approved their request for crusade in Abakiliki, assuring them of his total support and advised them to work with his secretary for the actualisation of that purpose.

In his address the General Chairman of Ebonyi State Catholic Community in Onitsha, Ambassador Moses Igwe. said the essence of the Bishop’s visit was to identify with themselves .

He said they started the community as a way of uniting their people because of various communal clashes in the State

He decried the increasing idolatory among the youths of the State, stressing that the essence of the visit was a way of fighting idolatory, cultism and poverty among their youths.

Igwe said they were poised to bring back those people who have backslided into idolatory and cultism.

Others who lauded the Bishop for his visit were, Brother Chukwudi Ede, Chairman, Planning Committee of the Bishop’ s visit, Mr. Okpe- Udo Uchenna, director of Information, Brother Joseph Nwonyi, a member of the Planning Committee among others.
