The Taraba Police Command has described the Chairman of Gassol Local Government Council, Hon. Abubakar Saidu, as an alarmist and an agent of falsehood out to discredit the efforts of the Command in clearing Jalingo metropolis of kidnapping and other crimes.
The Police while reacting to the circulating reports that gunmen attempted to kidnap the Chairman of Gassol Local Government Council, Abubakar Saidu, at his residence in Jalingo on July 10, said the news of the alleged kidnap attempt which emanated from the Chairman was not only false but fake and misleading.
In a statement made available to media practitioners in Jalingo, the Acting Police Public Relations Officer, James Lashen Saminu, explained that on 10th July 2025 at about 3:15 a.m., the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of GRA Division received a distress call from the Chairman.
The Chairman, according to the statement, reported to the GRA police claiming he noticed suspicious movements around his residence near Algon House in Jalingo, the state capital.
“The DPO and his patrol team swiftly responded and arrived at the scene, but could not locate any suspects.
Further interaction with the Chairman revealed that there was no trace of anybody or criminals around his residence when the police patrol team rushed to the area.
There was no direct contact between the suspicious persons and the Chairman, nor was there any attempt to break into his residence that could constitute the offence of attempted kidnap,” the statement clarified.
The Commissioner of Police, Emmanuel Simon Bretet, assured residents that the Command remains fully committed to safeguarding lives and property in the state.
Beretet further advised residents of Jalingo and the state at large to remain calm and carry on with their lawful activities without fear, noting that incidents of kidnapping in the state have been significantly curtailed as there has never been any reported kidnap case in Jalingo in the last one year.
Residents of Jalingo wondered why a serving council chairman would raise such false alarm at a time Governor Agbu Kefas and the police command had cleared Jalingo, the state capital of all forms of crimes, including kidnapping in the past one year.
Jonathan Bulus, a resident of GRA in Jalingo called on the police to arrest and prosecute the chairman of Gassol Local Government, Abubakar Saidu for spreading false rumours.
“I think the Chairman of Gassol Local Government’s intention is to discredit the efforts of the state Governor, Agbu Kefas in his unrelenting efforts to rid the state of all forms of crime.
“Everyone can attest to the fact that there has not been any reported case kidnapping in Jalingo for the past one year since the Governor declared war against criminals in the state,” he said.
