An Anambra State High Court sitting in Neni and presided over by Justice Onyinye Anumonye has convicted Collins Chinweze, a community vigilante member, for the murder of a resident, John Akpando. The court has adjourned the case to October 3, 2025, for sentencing.
Chinweze, who was attached to the residence of a well-known philanthropist in Ukpo, Dunukofia Local Government Area, was found guilty of abusing his position. According to court findings, he frequently used his authority to disconnect essential services such as electricity and water from residents he reportedly disliked.
The situation escalated when the victim, Akpando, who had suffered from these disconnections, reported Chinweze’s actions to the philanthropist. This led to Chinweze’s dismissal from his role.
In a fit of rage, Chinweze was said to have ambushed Akpando in March 2018, shooting him in the chest and then at the back of the head, resulting in the victim’s death.
During the trial, the prosecution, led by Assistant Chief State Counsel, Barrister Fabian Okeke from the Anambra State Ministry of Justice, presented seven witnesses. Their testimonies effectively debunked Chinweze’s alibi, including a key individual the convict claimed to be with at the time of the murder—who denied the claim under oath.
The court’s decision to convict follows years of legal proceedings and thorough cross-examination of evidence. Justice Anumonye set October 3, 2025, as the date for delivering the final sentence.
