Anambra State Governor, Prof. Charles Chukwuma Soludo, has officially flagged off the construction of St. Stephen’s Road at the Emmanuel Church Road junction in Onitsha, the commercial hub of the State.
The project is part of Soludo’s broader urban renewal plan aimed at upgrading Onitsha’s internal road network and improving the city’s infrastructure.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Governor highlighted his administration’s focus on infrastructure since assuming office, citing ongoing transformation efforts in Okpoko, environmental clean-up in Ochanja, and other development projects across the city.
“This project is just the beginning of our plans for inland Onitsha,” Soludo said, stressing that it forms part of a comprehensive strategy to enhance infrastructure, improve environmental health, and raise the quality of life for residents.
The event also included a moment of silence in honour of the late Justice Azuka, a respected community leader and lawmaker. Describing his death as tragic and disturbing, Soludo acknowledged the security concerns surrounding the incident and assured the public that suspects had been arrested. He vowed that justice would be served and pledged to tackle violence and restore societal values.
Ahead of the upcoming bye-election for Onitsha North Constituency One, the Governor urged residents to support the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) candidate, Barrister Mimi Azikiwe, noting that an APGA majority in the State House of Assembly would strengthen advocacy for local development.
Commissioner for Youth Development, Mr. Patrick Aghamba, praised the Governor’s efforts, citing improvements in water supply, road infrastructure, and education.
The Mayor of Onitsha North LGA, Mr. Tony Nworah, also expressed confidence in APGA’s victory at the polls.
The ceremony was attended by traditional and community groups, including Agbalanze and Umu Ikporo Onitsha, reflecting strong grassroots support for Soludo’s initiatives and renewed optimism for the city’s growth.
