Anambra gov’t commended for banning punishment of school children for speaking Igbo in class

The President of Ohaneze Ndigbo in Anambra State, Chief Damian Okeke-Ogene has commended the State Government for the ban of punishment and fining of school children who speak Igbo language in the classroom.

Speaking to journalists in Awka, Chief Okeke-Ogene said the bold and decisive action will strengthen the drive towards promoting Igbo language and culture.

Our correspondent reports that Chief Okeke-Ogene said while it is important to learn English and other foreign languages, it should not be at the expense of the Mother tongue which is the major cultural identity of Ndigbo.

He said schools should aspire to teach the children all components of Igbo language including the proverbs and idioms to encourage them to take pride in their cultural heritage.

He urged parents to drop the habit of communicating with their children in foreign languages in their various homes.

Chief Okeke-Ogene called on the government of the South-East States to follow the Anambra example and ensure that Igbo language takes a pride of place in the school curriculum.

He noted that Governor Willie Obiano has remained consistent in his resolve to champion the Igbo cause and promotion of the welfare of the people.

Also speaking, the Co-ordinator of the Anambra Mandate for Good Governance, Mr. Olisa Aniuno said the Governor is building institutions and fundamental principles that will help entrench basic principles of good governance and sustainable development.

Mr. Aniuno noted that the administration has remained very responsive to physical infrastructure and human capital development as well as provided enabling environment for socio-economic and political activities to thrive which he observed has attracted huge investment to the State.

In is reaction, a retired headmaster, Mr. Felix Onyeakalusi urged the State Ministry of Education to put necessary machineries in motion to ensure strict compliance to the ban in both private and public schools.
