Anambra investigates allegations of extortion by commercial bus drivers

Anambra State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Christian Mmadubuko has said that the State government is committed to entrenching a favourable atmosphere for the State transport industry.
Dr. Mmadubbuko made this known while addressing the media over the alleged blockage of the Bridge Head by commercial bus operators over allegation of extortions.
Dr. Mmadubbuko said he got information about the alleged extortions last month from an anonymous person and invited all relevant parties to his office to hear from them.
The Commissioner, who noted that the matter is still under investigation, wondered why the bus drivers blocked the major road.
Commissioner Mmadubbuko furthe r explained that Anambra State Ministry of Transport is working with its Delta State counterpart to bring a lasting solution to the matter as the issue involves the two State governments.
He made it clear that the Willie Obiano led administration is highly determined to ensuring that nobody in the State is shortchanged under any guise promising that the issue would soon be resolved amicably.
Commercial bus drivers had yesterday blocked the Asaba axis of the Niger Bridge alleging extortions by touts.
Meanwhile, Anambra State government with effect from first April, 2020 will begin impounding vehicles not properly registered in the State.
The release signed by the State Commissioner for Transport, Dr. Christian Madubuko observed with dismay the increasing use of non-registered vehicles with expired papers, unauthorized and unallocated State government number plates especially on privately owned vehicles, covered numbers plates, incomplete number plates, unathourized and illegally procured government number plates such NYCN, NANS, PEACE AMBASSADOR and non-renewal of vehicle papers in the state.
The release advised all motorists that fall under the aforementioned categories to immediately proceed to the nearest Motor Licensing Office in the State to properly register their vehicles as prescribed under the extant laws and regulations of Nigeria and Anambra State.
The release further reminded motorists that Anambra State Traffic law 1991, Road Traffic Act, 1999 and National Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 Prohibits the use of such vehicles on public roads and highways hence the need to register their vehicles accordingly.
