The Labour Party Youth Leader in Anambra State, Comrade Ekene Nnadi, is still embittered by the way the Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof Mahmoud Yakubu, bungled the last election, saying that he has taken Nigeria democracy 50 years back.
The youth leader who spoke during an interview in Onitsha, Anambra State, said “if INEC chairman had conscience he should by now have committed suicide”.
The obviously angered youth leader wondered how he had the boldness to face his family in the face of widespread condemnation and strident criticisms which he elicited for bungling the election inspite of reassurance to Nigerians and the international community that the election would be free, fair and credible.
Nnadi said Yakubu dashed the hopes of Nigerians especially the youth which he said had vowed not to participate in future democratic process in the country.
He however called on the National Assembly and relevant stakeholders in Nigeria democracy to begin the process of enacting a new Electoral Act which this time would make it compulsory for INEC to transmit results real time, online.
Nnadi equally advocated that the law guiding the appointment of the INEC chairman and National Electoral Commissioners that would limit the powers of executive in appointing the top echelons of Electrical umpires be enacted before next election season.
“It was obvious that the last election was an open robbery. Prof. Yakubu was a total disappointment” he said.
The Labour youth leader lauded the political philosophy and performance of Mr. Peter Obi, the Labour Party Presidential candidate in the last election.
He said: “We appreciate Obi for his political ideology which has brought radical change to our democracy. He fought a good fight. He is a symbol of hope for Nigerians especially the young ones. I encourage him not to be deterred or discouraged. We are proud of him. He should continue in the struggle to rescue Nigeria”.
The youth leader also commended the Party’s legislators in the National Assembly from Anambra State for their legislative action and contribution in the National Assembly.
He said Chief Victor Umeh, Senator Tony Nwoye, Prof Orogbu, Hon Okonkwo and others have done well so far, saying that their victories at the Courts were clear indication that they won the election free and fair.
