Anambra launches ‘Operation Udo Ga Achi’ to combat crime

By Sunny A. David, Awka

The operation, launched at Amawbia Flyover, Awka, under the leadership of Governor Chukwuma Soludo, represents a collaborative effort between the State government, security agencies, and the community.

The multi-agency operation involves the Police, Army, Navy, DSS, NSCDC, Immigration, Correctional Service, FRSC, and Anambra Vigilantes. It utilizes an intelligence-driven approach, employing stop-and-search tactics, targeted joint patrols, and strategically positioned personnel and armored vehicles. Divisions Police Officers have been instructed to conduct raids on known criminal hotspots.

Commissioner of Police Ikioye Orutugu highlighted the operation’s proactive nature, designed to address public safety concerns, particularly during the Easter period and beyond, and encourage residents to return home. He emphasized a commitment to civil interactions with the public.

A Joint Security Information Room has been established with dedicated emergency hotlines for various agencies (Police: 07039194332, NDLEA: 09136832679, NSCDC: 080666769442, FRSC: 122, with additional numbers to be released).

Community support is integral to the operation. Local organizations, including the Association of Bars and Restaurants, Ultimate Women Group, and the Ultimate Business Women and Farmers Association of Nigeria (UBWFAN), have pledged their cooperation.

The Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC) highlighted ongoing CCTV installations to enhance surveillance. The recent apprehension of over 30 illegal immigrants from Niger Republic underscores increased border security.

The success of “Operation Udo Ga Achi” hinges on community intelligence sharing. Residents are urged to report suspicious activities via the provided hotlines.

CP Orutugu expressed gratitude for the State government’s support, including vehicle repairs, and reiterated the collective goal of making Anambra a safer place.
