Anambra State has temporarily closed Community Secondary School in Awor-Ezimuzor, Nnewi South, following reports of the unlawful arrest, torture, and detention of the school principal and vice principal by a local vigilante group.
Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chuma-Udeh, announced the closure in a statement Thursday.
The school will remain closed until the safety of all staff and students is ensured.
The closure comes after the principal and vice principal were allegedly held for three days by the vigilantes, deprived of food, water, and sanitation.
The incident has reportedly traumatized students, many of whom are currently taking the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and West African School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).
To address the situation, the commissioner has convened an urgent meeting involving the Post Primary Schools Service Commission, relevant board members, zonal directors, school management, and community leaders.
The meeting aims to resolve the matter and secure the well-being of the school community.
The State government is urging all stakeholders to approach the meeting with urgency and seriousness.
