Chief Dr. Ebuka Onunkwo, a senatorial aspirant under the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) for Anambra South, made headlines on Wednesday, July 23, 2025, after gifting ₦100,000 each to three women who were moved to tears upon hearing of his withdrawal from the senatorial race.
Onunkwo, who is the founder and CEO of Seahorse Lubricant Industries Ltd., presented the gifts during a “Thank You” event held at his country home in Ihembosi, Ekwusigo Local Government Area. The event was organized to appreciate his supporters for their unwavering commitment to his political journey.
The three women, including a Mrs. Ann from Nnewi, reportedly broke down in tears earlier in the week when Onunkwo announced his decision to step down from the race.
His withdrawal was made in deference to the APGA leadership and in support of Chief Emma Nwachukwu, who has now been adopted as the party’s consensus candidate for the upcoming senatorial by-election.
In a further show of appreciation, Onunkwo also distributed ₦100 million among his supporters, including party executives, ward leaders, media aides, and campaign volunteers across the seven local government areas that make up Anambra South.
Addressing the crowd, Chief Onunkwo thanked his supporters for their loyalty and sacrifice. He described his campaign as one of the most vibrant and people focused movements the zone had seen in recent times, drawing comparisons to the era of the late Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Ubah.
He emphasized his desire to reshape the internal structure of APGA and ensure that party leaders at all levels are empowered and recognized.
“I have come to change the narrative of APGA in Anambra State. I want the party executives across the seven local government areas to feel a sense of belonging,” he said. “If you’re a ward chairman or secretary, you should have something to show for it.”
Onunkwo urged affluent individuals to remain in the party and play active roles in transforming both the party and the lives of its members. He noted that since his entry into politics in October 2024, APGA had witnessed a positive shift in its internal dynamics.
With Chief Emma Nwachukwu now confirmed as the APGA candidate, the stage is set for the Anambra South senatorial by-election scheduled for August 16, 2025. All political parties participating in the race have reportedly finalized their candidates.
