Anambra titled women group distributes N5m worth of food items to widows

Enugwu-Ukwu Community Women group in Njikoka Local Government Area of Anambra State under the aegis Otu Odu- Eze (Wives of Enugwu-Ukwu cabinet chiefs) has donated food items worth N5 million to widows in the community to celebrate yuletide.

Her Majesty, Lady Dora Ekpeh, wife of Igwe Ralph Ekpeh, the traditional ruler of Enugwu-Ukwu community who stated this during an interview with newsmen in her Palace said that over 3000 widows have benefitted from the programme in the last five years.

Ekpeh, who doubles as the President of the women group said they have supported widows of the community in the programme for the past five years.

She said the vision behind the action was to support their husbands in building a community where love thrives among the members of the society by engaging in feeding charity annually.

Chief Edith Anaekwe, Iyom Nmachi, the Deputy President of the group said that they meant well for the community and used the forum to collaborate with their husbands in the development of the community.

Anaekwe, wife of the Traditional Prime Minister of the Community, Ozo Dennis Anaekwe, said over 90 indigent widows were gifted with basic food items, such as rice, beans, amongst other items.

She noted that this year’s beneficiaries went home with N10, 000 each including the food items and refreshments given them.

Anaekwe said the beneficiaries were selected purely based on merit not on preferencial basis.

“Let me shock you, about six women were sent out by Igwe’s wife, when she found out that the women were not indigent as stipulated by our guidelines. You see how careful we are in the selection procedure, even when their village women leaders select them from the 18 villages we still do our checks to ensure compliance to our criteria. There is no favoritism at all,” she said.

Chief Patricia Nkwoji, Iyom, a senior member of the group and a legal practitioner hailed their initiative which has given hope to many of the women in the community.

“I am grateful to God for the privilege to be in a position to make someone smile
“I pray God to change their fortune,” she said.

Chief Chinelo Ayika,Olaedo’-Atu, another member commended the leadership of the group for their initiative, saying that serving the community through the group was a rare opportunity.
