The Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria, Most Rev. Michael Francis Crotty, has applauded the Catholic Bishops of Nigeria for their steadfast dedication to the mission of the Church, encouraging them to continue promoting unity and evangelization across the country.
Archbishop Crotty gave the commendation during the opening ceremony of the 2025 Second Plenary Assembly of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria (CBCN), held on September 14 at the Retreat and Youth Development Centre, Nto Ekpu Ikot Nko, Obot Akara, Akwa Ibom State.
Highlighting the bishops’ tradition of visiting dioceses annually in fraternity and collaboration, the Nuncio described it as a unique witness of faith and solidarity.
“This is my second plenary since my arrival in Nigeria as Apostolic Nuncio,” he said. “I commend the bishops of Nigeria for this custom. I encourage the CBCN to embark on a ‘roadshow of faith,’ so that more people may encounter the living Christ through your witness.”
He reminded the gathering that the Church’s ultimate mission is the salvation of souls, stressing that “our task is to win more souls for Jesus Christ.”
Reflecting on the passing of Pope Francis on Easter Monday, the Nuncio described it as a moment of profound loss for Catholics worldwide. He, however, expressed hope in the leadership of Pope Leo XIV, who was recently elected to guide the universal Church.
As part of the plenary, the bishops and participants marked the Pope’s 70th birthday with a special song of blessing and thanksgiving.
“Today, as Pope Leo XIV celebrates his 70th birthday, we thank God for this milestone,” Archbishop Crotty said. “We pray that the Lord continues to strengthen him with sound health and long life as he shepherds the Church.”
