ATBUTH holds 2025 annual research, scientific conference, focuses on maternal, child-care amid security challenges
The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University Teaching Hospital (ATBUTH), Bauchi, has hosted its 2025 Annual Research and Scientific Conference at the hospital’s multipurpose hall, drawing healthcare professionals, researchers, policymakers, and development partners from across the country.
This year’s conference focused on the sub-theme “Maternal and Child Care in the Face of Security Challenges,” addressing the growing concern over how insecurity continues to threaten healthcare access and outcomes, especially for women and children.
This was contained in a statement by Bulus James of the Public Relations and Protocol Unit.
Delivering the keynote address, Dr. Salihu Aliyu Kwayabura of Borno State highlighted the severity of risks faced by pregnant women, infants, and healthcare providers in conflict-prone and hard-to-reach regions.
He explained that persistent insecurity has disrupted essential healthcare services, limited access to antenatal and emergency care, and heightened the vulnerability of mothers and newborns. Dr. Kwayabura called for stronger community-based health systems, better emergency response preparedness, and closer collaboration between security agencies and health institutions to safeguard maternal and child health.
Representing the Executive Governor of Bauchi State, Sen. Bala Mohammed, the Chairman of the occasion, Prof. Abdulkareem Garba Mairiga, commended ATBUTH for maintaining its tradition of promoting research-driven healthcare delivery.
Prof. Mairiga emphasized that improving maternal and child health outcomes in insecure environments requires innovation, sustained government commitment, and proactive community engagement.
He encouraged participants to ensure their research outcomes translate into tangible interventions that can support families affected by insecurity.
In his welcome address, the Chief Medical Director of ATBUTH, Prof. Yusuf Jibrin Bara, represented by the Chairman Medical Advisory Committee, Dr. Haruna Usman Liman, reaffirmed the hospital’s resolve to continue delivering quality healthcare despite Nigeria’s evolving security landscape.
Prof. Jibrin noted that the annual conference serves as a vital platform for knowledge exchange, capacity strengthening, and the development of practical solutions to complex healthcare challenges.
He commended the organizing committee for their efforts and expressed optimism that the conference outcomes would contribute to informed policymaking and improved service delivery nationwide.
The event also featured three sessions of abstract presentations, where researchers showcased their findings, followed by highly engaging interactive discussions.
The 2025 ATBUTH Research and Scientific Conference reaffirmed the institution’s leadership in driving evidence-based healthcare and its commitment to addressing pressing public health issues affecting vulnerable populations.
