Athletes storm Bauchi for North-East U-17 athletics championship, urged to shun drugs

No fewer than 80 athletes from the six states of the North-East subregion have converged in Bauchi for the maiden edition of the under-17 Zonal athletic zonal championship.
The competition commenced in Bauchi on Friday, with a call on the young athletes to shun illicit drugs and participate in a healthy atmosphere.
The two day sporting event, was initiated by the North-East zonal representative at the Athletic Federation of Nigeria (AFN), Alhaji Adamu Babayo Gabarin who is the State Commissioner of Sports and Youths Development.
The championship was organised through the State Sports Council in conjunction with the Ministry of Youths and Sports Development.
Speaking to Sports Journalists at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa Memorial Stadium venue of the championship, Head of Technical of the Sports Council, Coach Bala Magaji Juwara, said that, a total of 80 athletes both males and females will compete in at six categories of the Athletics event.

Bala Juwara explained that the under-17 athletes will compete in 100, 200, 400, 800 and, 1500 meters as well as Long Jump all in males and females categories.
He added that the championship will help in identifying hidden talents among young populace that can be nurtured to represent their respective states at zonal and national events.
He thanked AFN, North-East representative, Alhaji Adamu Babayo Gabarin for initiating the two day event, saying it will boost Athletics and other sporting events across six states of the region.
He wished the participating athletes success and warned them to avoid taking illicit drugs before, during and after the championship, emphasizing that winners from current trials will be invited to the national camp for further trainings.
The athletes are drawn from Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe States.
