Bauchi Chief Judge laments lack of proper records of awaiting trial inmates

Bauchi State Chief Judge, Justice Rabi Talatu Umar

The Chief Judge of Bauchi State, Justice Rabi Talatu Umar has expressed worries that some inmates at the Bauchi Custodial Centre are lacking proper records of the period of their awaiting trial ranging between 4, 5 and 6 years of languishing.
Rabi Umar also noted with concern that some of the awaiting trial inmates have not been presented to the courts for years, a situation that makes their records go out of hands.
The Chief Judge was speaking while releasing 14 awaiting trial inmates at the Custodial Centre, attributing the release to God’s intervention in their cases.
The Chief Judge was undertaking a routine visits to Correctional Centres across the state to review the cases of awaiting trial inmates, especially those that have stayed for so long in those centres without trial.
During the visit, the chief judge was at Tafawa Balewa, Darazo, Misau, Azare, Bogoro, Ningi, Jama’are and Bauchi Centers where she released 5 at Tafawa Balewa, 2 each at Misau and Azare while 14 regained freedom from the Bauchi centre.
However, none of the inmates at Jamare, Ningi, Darazo and Bogoro was able to regain freedom during the CJ review visit which is being undertaken every three months.
The Chief Judge while commenting on some of the awaiting trial inmates whose litigation records were completely out of sight remarked, “We don’t know who brought them here”.
Justice Rabi Talatu Umar therefore counseled the released the awaiting trial inmates having gained freedom to find legitimate means of livelihood.
