The Bauchi State College of Agriculture, the oldest higher institution in Bauchi State, recently welcomed a team from the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), led by Dr. Rufa’i Ibrahim, for the accreditation of its programs.
The exercise marks a significant milestone in the college’s history as it seeks to consolidate its reputation as a premier agricultural training institution.
Established in 1971 as the School of Agricultural and Animal Husbandry, the college has undergone several transformations, including its merger with other institutions to form the Abubakar Tatari Ali Polytechnic in 1983.
It regained independence in 2013, with a mandate to offer programs in agriculture and related disciplines at Certificate, National Diploma (ND), and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels.
Over the years, the college has contributed immensely to the development of agriculture in Bauchi State and across the nation, producing skilled professionals who now work in various government and private agricultural establishments.
During the accreditation exercise, the Provost of the College expressed deep appreciation to the NBTE for their prompt response despite their tight schedule.
He highlighted the unwavering support of the Bauchi State Governor, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, whose administration has approved and funded numerous developmental projects at the college.
Key achievements under Governor Bala Mohammed’s administration include:
The ongoing construction of a perimeter fence around the college for enhanced security.
The renovation and rehabilitation of the college’s greenhouse.
The upgrade of the Soil Science Laboratory into a Soil, Water, and Plant Analysis Center, which is expected to be the best in the North-East region.
The establishment of an artificial insemination center for genetic improvement of animals.
The creation of an animal feed culture unit and a farmers’ field school to train local farmers in modern agricultural practices.
“These interventions demonstrate the governor’s commitment to the growth of agriculture and the upliftment of educational standards in the state.
No previous administration has matched these efforts,” the Provost said, while also commending the state’s Commissioner of higher education for facilitating approvals and releases.
Dr. Rufa’i Ibrahim, team leader of the NBTE delegation, lauded the significant progress made by the college since the last accreditation exercise in 2014.
He emphasized that the current administration’s support has greatly improved the institution’s infrastructure, teaching quality, and research capabilities.
“We are impressed by the level of development and the commitment of the governor to this college. His efforts have created an enabling environment for staff and students. We encourage stakeholders to continue supporting the college so that its programs remain competitive nationally,” Dr. Ibrahim remarked.
The NBTE team also expressed a desire to brief Governor Mohammed on their findings and explore additional ways to support the college in becoming a center of excellence for agricultural education in Nigeria.
The Provost concluded the event with prayers for a successful accreditation exercise and reiterated the college’s resolve to uphold the highest standards in agricultural education.
